ORAFC Club Dinner 2002

30/05/2002

Another great night to remember, a time to unwind after a long hard season that was one of the most successful for many a year and one that promises so much for the future, with new, young, and talented players coming into the Club.

A big thank you to Andy Foot for doing the honours in arranging and organising it all again.

The usual amout of heavy drinking preceded the meal, the pre-match chat not being so much centred on who would win what award, but rather on James Gregory's natty, Starsky, hairstyle.

Terry Harvey, unfortunately could not be there, but we all felt his presence in the room. Dave Billing did the honours and food was taken, Mick Timmons becoming a temporary waiter to deliver Alan Harding's dinner to him in the bar where he had lodged himself.

And so to the speeches and awards. Neil took the Club Captain's speech for the last time before stepping down (click here to see a transcript of it) and a jolly good show he made of it too. The sweep on the speech was won by Keith Everett on the top table and murmers of "fix" were heard rippling through the gathered throng. However, it must be mentioned here that Keith donated the winnings back to the Club for training balls. A very nice gesture, thank you.

Then came the main guest's speech. It started with "I'm more of a rugby man myself...", which went down like Monica Lewinsky at a Church Council meeting. Still, it finished on a song.

Club awards were then handed out - full details at the Virtual Trophy Cabinet. Incidentally, if anyone can help with filling in the blanks of some of the past winners, please let me know.

Anyway, some idiot was running round with a camera and the results of this happy snapping can be seen below, although he never managed to capture the Oxted and District Cup filled with a cocktail strong enough to melt it away, which it seemed had happened when at the end of the evening as no-one could find it. Relax, it turned up safe the next day.
